Charles received a BA in Mathematics from The Citadel, and an MS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Charleston. He served as an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the US Military Academy in both the Mathematics and Systems Engineering Departments. He is currently studying the resiliency of complex networks of metropolitan infrastructure. His prior research includes developing and implementing software for geospatial systems to understand the relationship between the land and socio-cultural networks.  He has traveled to developing nations focusing on how people connect and behave because of the way they see, understand, and internalize the surrounding terrain. He is an infantry officer in the US Army.
